This short range motion sensor kit from Adafruit is a great addition to your microcontroller project.

Short range - best results in the 10-150mm range
5V compliant so you can use it with 3.3V or 5V logic
Works best at 5V as the VIN powers the IR LED and the higher the voltage, the more powerful it is
Works with any microcontroller with i2c capability
Ambient light sensor built in
